In the Marine Corps, he was sent to China right after boot camp. China was in
the midst of a religious war, and U.S. troops were sent to keep order. He
served for 4 years, was home for about one month, and was drafted into World
War I. He served most of war in Paris and Perigeux, France, as an
interpreter. After the war, he went to Pittsburgh to run his uncle's butter,
egg, & cheese business. After a few years, he went to Hollywood and worked
in the movies until his retirement.
